I. THE HOLY – "THE MYSTERIUM TREMENDUM"

A. In all cultures and extending through all religions is the idea of the mysterious,

"the holy."At the core of religious belief and practice is the mysterious,

supernaturally threatening presence. In the soul of humanity is the indelible mark

that something out there is so awesome, so powerful, so beautiful that it is

terrifying to think on and hazardous to behold. Deep within the framework of

humanity is a dread, a terrifying sense that something out there is worthy of our

worship and can either help us or hurt us in our frail condition.

B. A. W. Tozer – "The feeling for mystery, even for the Great Mystery, is basic in

human nature and indispensable to religious faith, but it is not enough. Because

of it men may whisper, "That awful thing," but they do not cry, "Mine Holy

One!" In the Hebrew and Christian Scriptures God carries forward His selfrevelation

and gives it personality and moral content. This awful Presence is

shown to be not a Thing but a moral Being with all the warm qualities of genuine

personality. More than this, He is the absolute quintessence of moral excellence,

infinitely perfect in righteousness, purity, rectitude, and incomprehensible

holiness. And in all this He is uncreated, self-sufficient and beyond the power of

human thought to conceive or human speech to utter."

C. We were made to tremble. We were designed to be awestruck by power and

beauty in such a way that produces shaking in our bones and quivering on our

lips.

1. The example of Muphassah (?) in the Lion King

2. The Seraphim and the Living Creatures

II. ENCOUNTER UNTO TREMBLING

A. Have you ever noticed how many things shake in God’s presence? Have you ever

observed the vast amount of trembling around the Almighty?

B. The influence of the Almighty produces shaking and trembling among everything

as He draws near. Nothing escapes the trembling influence of the Lord. His

Holiness, the consummation of all His perfections, are terrifying in their grandeur.

III. DARIUS JOINS NEBUCHADNEZZAR AS A FORERUNNER WARNING

OTHER KINGS CONCERNING THE MOST HIGH

A. Darius joins the forerunner of Psalm 2:11 and makes a decree that all the peoples

must tremble and fear before the God of Daniel.

Dan. 6:26-27 I make a decree that in every dominion of my kingdom men must

tremble and fear before the God of Daniel. For He is the living God, And

steadfast forever; His kingdom is the one which shall not be destroyed, And His

dominion shall endure to the end. 27 He delivers and rescues, And He works signs

and wonders In heaven and on earth, Who has delivered Daniel from the power of

the lions.

B. Darius proclaims that no options exist. All must tremble and fear the God of

Daniel, for He is steadfast and His government is not going away. It has no end.

All peoples must recognize the authority of the King of Heaven. His kingdom has

no weak points. Attack His people, and He will rescue and deliver them. His

Kingdom is enforced and displayed through signs and wonders in heaven and on

the earth. All His people are protected by His great care. He shouts the warning

with David, "Serve the Lord with Fear. That is, Rejoice with Trembling and Kiss

the Son." Recognize the King on His Holy Mountain.

IV. WHO WILL YOU TREMBLE AT THE END OF THE AGE

A. Three Factors Reach a Crescendo at the End of the Age that produce trembling on

the Earth.

1. Rage of Satan

2. Human Sin Reaching its Height

3. Judgments of God –purifying the saints, producing the great harvest, and

punishing the wicked.

B. The Bible calls this time the time of Jacob’s trouble. It is the time when God

chastises Israel by gathering them to their nation (Hos. 11:10), assembling the

nations against her under the rulership of a demonized world ruler who is

empowered by Satan doing miracles, signs and wonders and who stands in the

Holy Place claiming to be God. He will deceive the nations. He worships the god

of fortresses and ushers in a time of rule and oppression like no other time in

human history. This ruler is said to have 3 ½ years of dominance and oppression

on the earth. The saints will be persecuted, the nations will gather against

Jerusalem, God will unleash His judgments, and Jesus will return to set up His

everlasting Kingdom on earth. All the prophets who saw this time trembled

because of the severity of the hour.

1. Isaiah 63-64

2. Jer. 23:9 & 30:5

Jer 23:9 My heart within me is broken Because of the prophets; All my

bones shake. I am like a drunken man, And like a man whom wine has

overcome, Because of the LORD, And because of His holy words. NKJV

Jer 30:5-7 "For thus says the LORD: 'We have heard a voice of trembling,

Of fear, and not of peace. 6 Ask now, and see, Whether a man is ever in

labor with child? So why do I see every man with his hands on his loins

like a woman in labor, And all faces turned pale? 7 Alas! For that day is

great, So that none is like it; And it is the time of Jacob's trouble, But he

shall be saved out of it. NKJV

3. Joel 2:1-2 Blow the trumpet in Zion, And sound an alarm in My holy

mountain! Let all the inhabitants of the land tremble; For the day of the

LORD is coming, For it is at hand: 2 A day of darkness and gloominess,

A day of clouds and thick darkness, Like the morning clouds spread over

the mountains. A people come, great and strong, The like of whom has

never been; Nor will there ever be any such after them, Even for many

successive generations. NKJV

4. Dan 10:11 And he said to me, "O Daniel, man greatly beloved, understand

the words that I speak to you, and stand upright, for I have now been sent

to you." While he was speaking this word to me, I stood trembling. NKJV

5. Hab 3:16 When I heard, my body trembled; My lips quivered at the voice;

Rottenness entered my bones; And I trembled in myself, That I might rest

in the day of trouble. When he comes up to the people, He will invade

them with his troops. NKJV

C. Jesus warns us that this time period will be known by the greatness of the fear –

Luke 21:26. Many persons’ hearts will fail from the fear of the expectation of

things to come.

Luke 21:25-28 "And there will be signs in the sun, in the moon, and in the stars;

and on the earth distress of nations, with perplexity, the sea and the waves

roaring; 26 men's hearts failing them from fear and the expectation of those

things which are coming on the earth, for the powers of the heavens will be

shaken. 27 Then they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and

great glory. 28 Now when these things begin to happen, look up and lift up your

heads, because your redemption draws near." NKJV

D. We are not to tremble and fear what the others fear. Isa. 8:12-13 "Do not say, 'A

conspiracy,' Concerning all that this people call a conspiracy, Nor be afraid of

their threats, nor be troubled. 13 The LORD of hosts, Him you shall hallow; Let

Him be your fear, And let Him be your dread. NKJV

1. Fear is a form of worship. It is a form of bowing the heart in

submission. Fear is the recognition of the greatness of something else.

You tremble at something which is greater.

2. Jesus goes on to tell us in Luke 21:27-28 that we do not have to fear in

that day because he told us of the things to come and that when these

things begin to happen, look up and lift your head heads, because

your redemption draws near." Rather, fear the Lord and letit escort

you into a life of sober, watchful prayer and holiness.

3. Paul tells us in II Thess. 2:2 not to be shaken in mind or troubled. Rather,

exercise yourself towards godliness and let us live as sons of the Day/sons

of light, throwing of the old deeds of the flesh done in darkness. Rather,

let us look to the fascinated trembling accompanied with the coming of the

Lord Jesus.

4. Peter tells us that in light of the Second Coming of Christ and the passing

away of the heavens and earth, "therefore, since allthese things will be

dissolved, what manner of persons ought you to be in holy conduct and

godliness looking for and hastening the coming of the day of God. He

goes on to say that we are His beloved looking forward to these things and

therefore we are to be diligent to be found in Him in peace, without spot

and blameless."

V. TREMBLING IN THE LIGHT OF ETERNITY –THE KEY TO OVERCOMING

FEAR

A. Understand the weakness of the kingdom of darkness which is temporary and is

passing away.

B. Isa 14:16-17 "Those who see you will gaze at you, And consider you, saying: 'Is

this the man who made the earth tremble, Who shook kingdoms, 17 Who made

the world as a wilderness And destroyed its cities, Who did not open the house of

his prisoners?' NKJV

C. Luke 12:4-5 "And I say to you, My friends, do not be afraid of those who kill the

body, and after that have no more that they can do. 5 But I will show you whom

you should fear: Fear Him who, after He has killed, has power to cast into hell;

yes, I say to you, fear Him! NKJV

D. 1 John 2:17 And the world is passing away, and the lust of it; but he who does the

will of God abides forever. NKJV

E. Becoming Fascinated with the Beautiful God Who Is Coming For You

1. Isa 8:12-13 "Do not say, 'A conspiracy,' Concerning all that this people

call a conspiracy, Nor be afraid of their threats, nor be troubled. 13 The

LORD of hosts, Him you shall hallow; Let Him be your fear, And let Him

be your dread. NKJV

2. Dan 12:1-3 "At that time Michael shall stand up, The great prince who

stands watch over the sons of your people; And there shall be a time of

trouble, Such as never was since there was a nation, Even to that time.

And at that time your people shall be delivered, Every one who is found

written in the book. 2 And many of those who sleep in the dust of the earth

shall awake, Some to everlasting life, Some to shame and everlasting

contempt. 3 Those who are wise shall shine Like the brightness of the

firmament, And those who turn many to righteousness Like the stars

forever and ever. NKJV

5. The Book of Revelation

6. Rev 15:1-4 Then I saw another sign in heaven, great and marvelous: seven

angels having the seven last plagues, for in them the wrath of God is

complete. 2 And I saw something like a sea of glass mingled with fire, and

those who have the victory over the beast, over his image and over his

mark and over the number of his name, standing on the sea of glass,

having harps of God. 3 They sing the song of Moses, the servant of God,

and the song of the Lamb, saying: "Great and marvelous are Your works,

Lord God Almighty! Just and true are Your ways, O King of the saints! 4

Who shall not fear You, O Lord, and glorify Your name? For You alone

are holy. For all nations shall come and worship before You, For Your

judgments have been manifested." NKJV
